Dear PKEY3101,

How are you doing? I hope you had been doing well. I am doing just fine over here. It’s been a while since the last time we met yeah? Did you remember we took pictures will all the other members and lecturers? It was really fun. The reason I wrote this letter to you is to say thank you, for being an eye-opener for me. Having the oppurtunity to meet you during this semester really had been a great experience for me. You had trained me a lot. The evil 21st century learning is coming, but do I scared of them now? NO I don’t Pkey. I am not scared of them anymore, all of it because of the knowledge I had gained from you. You are more than a trainer.

The experience being in the Live Boot camp – E-Portfolio style, really gives me the sense of belonging. During this camp that I had been trained together with my fellow Fighters, who, in the name of Education, strive towards victory of knowledge. It is in this camp, that my fellow Fighters had assessed me, and not just me, together we give comments and share knowledge, so that together we march forward. And this comments and not merely just saying it out loud, our trainers had taught us that, it must be constructive, and there we have it. Through this peer and self assessment, I was able to leap to a better person, not just to own self, but also to the others. It gives me and the others the opportunities to work hand-in-hand, train together and advance together.

I know that I was being skeptical towards Live Boot camp all this while, but, I got a pretty big thumbs up to be given to it now, and also to all our die-hard lecturers, Prof.Raja Maznah, Ms Ng, Dr. Chin, Ms Sakina, Mr Hafiz, Ms Marsyitah, a caps locked THANK YOU to all of you. Thank you for being patience with me, although I am not much of a help this semester, but with all the know-how and knowledge more valuable than diamonds provided by all of you, I think I just got a new rifle and kevlar suit, ready to get dirty in the Teaching Battefield.

I think that is all for now. Hope to meet you again in future. Insyaallah.

Yours truly,

abdul hakim ali bin abdul aziz

Talking about My ~Ideal Classroom~ = Make it a reality!

An interesting design and focus on DESUGGESTOPEDIA by Najwa. She has also share a software on building an IDEAL CLASSROOM.

Quote

My ~Ideal Classroom~ = Make it a reality!

Salam and hi guys!!

Now, we come to an interesting topic of all which I love so much,
this topic gives me the chance to dream of my own ideal classroom which
I want it to become a reality in the future…
My ideal classroom will integrate the three basic principle in language teaching
which are:

Desuggestopedia + Total Physical Response + Communicative Language Teaching = My Ideal Classroom

Of course, if possible, I want to integrate all the principle that I have learned in current learning of language
learning, but I try to make it possible to be done by teachers and also by me as future teacher. Thus, I have
chosen these three principles to be the basis of my created ideal classroom.

First and foremost, my classroom should be big and not just big but have three separate rooms in one LARGE
room. Or I can say 3 in 1. This is because towards the realization of my ideal classroom it will take some spaces
to give the students optimum learning condition.

Picture speaks louder than words… So, I think it is better if I scratch out the idea in form of picture below
on how my ideal classroom are going to look like.

As you all can see, my ideal classroom is divided into 3 rooms and each of the room
has its own use. The biggest rooms is the main room where the students
and teacher which is me are going to be. Here the students are seated at their desk
which was prepared with a laptop and also headset. This is to be used by students
when necessary. I will not allow the students to open the laptop while I am teaching as it will distract
their learning. The laptop and head set will be used in post activities or for additional
information.

Besides, this main room also included some posters with bright colours hanging on the wall
and also teacher plays some musics to cooperate the learning. As suggested in desuggestopedia,
through this, teacher will give the impression that learning is easy and enjoyable to the students.
They will enjoy the learning as much as possible. Teacher also encourage peripheral learning as
the pupils will see the posters and their handwork pasted on the wall everyday. Teacher need to change
the posters every week to update with the learning.

As you all can see, this main classroom is also provided with science lab at the back of the class. This lab
comprises with all the necessary tools including the fume cupboard, corner store cupboard, cupboard with
plants, slow worm tank, skeleton, telescope and sinks to support learning. Students will experience
hands on learning while having their science lesson going on at the same time. Talking about Total Physical Response,
it is all about experiencing it. By having the lab in a classroom, teacher just need to demonstrate and have the students
do it on heir own. this will give better understanding in the subject learned. However, teacher needs to
lock up all the tools or hazardous substances in order to avoid accidents in the classroom. Teacher needs
to ensure the students safety while handling the tools and substances in the lab.

As for the learning, teacher uses the principle of Communicative Language Learning as a basis.
Teacher encourage the students to talk and having their conversation in the target language as to make
them used to the language learned. Besides, in order to increase the understanding and make them
love the language, there is the second room which is the reading room. In the reading room,
my class has book racks, cushions and also soundproof booth. This room is to give the students the
chance to read and improve their language in their free time. While the soundproof booth is for the
students to listen to audio and improve their pronunciation of words.

Hmmm.. that is a lot already… But, I have one more room attached to the main room.
Hee..as you all can see the third room is more likely like a gymnasium. It is consist of
plenty of tools which the students can play as they need exercises at least once a week.
Some of the tools provided are badminton net, climbing equipment, climbing wall,
punchbag, gym horse, table tennis and trampoline. There are also water cooler where students
can drink if they are thirsty after playing.

If I reflect back to my time, it is not at all the same with my current classroom in my primary school.
It is just like any other classroom with teacher’s table, students’ desk and chair and also blackboard.
I really hope that I could make my ideal classroom a reality as not only the students will enjoy but
I will also enjoy the condition as the teaching and learning process is going on in a fun and enjoyable
condition.

I will also need to implement some rules for my own ideal classroom like these:
1. Students cannot play with the chemical substances without teacher’s supervising.
2. Students need to take care of their own classroom’s cleanliness.
3. Students need to take turn to use the soundproof booth.

Hmm..that is all that I can think about… I think it is too ambitious right?
My ideal classroom will cost a lot of money..hehe… This ideal classroom
is only planned for one classroom and  I think that what I planned is like for the
whole school.. Hehe.. whatever it is, I really hope that my ideal classroom will be a reality
in the future…
Who knows, nothing is impossible, make the impossible be possible!

*p/s : anyone who want to try creating their own classroom, please try
this game at this website game-design your own classroom

The picture below are some other classroom that I designed.. hehe..
just playing around…

This one have a drama stage room. Quite fun too…

This one emphasizes on sports room or gymnasium..

This one, I designed it using this website http://classroom.4teachers.org/ , Try it out!

Hmm.. I also have some links to the ideal classroom.

Talking about Musing On My Ideal Classroom

A poem: My ideal classroom by Aaron Lee

Quote

Musing On My Ideal Classroom

I have a simple dream about my ideal classroom

For I wish I have only 11 pupils in a class

11 pupils enough to build a football team

Easy to look after, easy to facilitate, easy to manage

I talk, and they must keep quiet and listen.

While I am idle, I want them to express their ideas freely

I dream of interactive classroom, but not as noisy as night market

For the environment in tranquility, I believe they can learn better

Once in a while, I play a song to entertain my pupils

Stories and tales are not to be missed.

The class I dream of is under a big tree in the beautiful garden

You can hear birds are chirping and small stream running through

For 11 of them, they are my friends

So just call my name, and I will be there to guide you

They complain of exhausted, I will motivate and encourage them

Pupils neither quit nor give up in learning

I believe they have their own potential and thus succeed in life

They complain tired again? Let’s have fun!

Together we pluck fruits and eat together

Go fishing, bird-watching, and playing chess

Breathing a fresh air in the beautiful garden, what a blissful life!

For my class is not out-of-date

I dream each of them will have a mini laptop

as small as exercise book with ‘powermyx’ connection, not streamyx.

With super-duper speed connection, I want to create a blog for my class

Free topic and free submission, let your creativity soar high like an eagle.

We share; we connect, and learn together!

No punishment, but loving tender care

For this ideal classroom, it can happen!

Only I go and take a nap now.

My Ideal classroom

Back in the days when I was a seven-year-old kid, my class layout was this:

It was like this for the past three years. We shifted to a different class (to upstairs) when I was Std 4. There were four big doors at both left and right. Imagine those doors in Convent School. Bright and airy. Good ventilation despite the fact there were no windows. When it rained, the doors need to be closed. It can very dark. My 3 years in the class were surrounded with chalks, dusters, blackboard and chalk dust. The wall at the back of the class were chosen art work produced from art classes. The desks and chairs were made of wood, heavy wood. Heavy because I had the trouble of lifting it up to the table during recess and when school was over. I was small and thin at that time. By the way, I sat in the middle row for three years. No changes. Short ones sat in front while the tall ones sat at the back.

I wish things were different. I wish I had my ideal classroom.

Items to make the ideal classroom.

1. Bean Bags!

Yes, colourful beanbags. Reeks out the FUN aura. I do not see it as the lazy way of sitting. Bean bags make the environment more relax.

FUN*RELAX=STIMULATES THINKING which eventually helps the creativity of the children.

2. Colourful walls

Yes, not grey, pasty colours. Taken from a quote in Sakila’s article

"Colors best suited for classrooms reduce agitation, apprehension and promote a sense of well-being. In brief, colors that reduce tension and anxiety produce a home-like atmosphere, in contrast to an "institutional" one. This corresponds with Educational Design Principle No. 7: "Consider Home as a Template for School." Wall colors are important; the hanging of artwork in various colors will not significantly compensate for otherwise monotonous or disagreeable wall colors. "Institutional white," although acceptable for some ceilings, is a common wall color choice that has little justification for widespread use. "

www.isu.edu/…/IdealClass_files/IdealClass.html

3. A fitted HUGE white board on the wall for the students to express themselves.

There will be lots of colourful markers for the kids to choose. It can be a corner where the kids can brainstorm and do discussions. Never underestimate the power of the kids’ mind.

4. Plants and Animals

Potted plants and fish corner. Of course there are hamsters and rabbits but I think there might be kids who are allergic to fur. Anyway, this corner is to instil the sense of being responsible individual by taking care of a living thing. Make sure the plants and fish live until the end. There will be rotation to take care of the items as to nurture collaborative responsibility.

5. State of the art computer corner

There will be a computer workstation. I am not going to provide 30 computers in one class-room. Maximum 14 with TWO printers (coloured) plus good sound system. Why? We want them to share, take turns, learn how to give and take. The workstation will be connected to the projector. The workstation from the mouse until the arrangement of the workstation and also the tables and chairs are all ergonomically safe and suitable to children’s physique.

So how will the classroom looks like?

THIS

OR THIS

The layout of my classroom will be somewhat like this:

You see things; and you say, "Why?"

But I dream things that never were; and I say, "Why not?"

Talking about my ideal classroom….:)

Highlight: Read Sakila’s dream on her Ideal classroom.

Quote

my ideal classroom….:)

My ideal classroom and how it would be…it may not possible but this is what I wish to have…

Teaching and learning in the 21st century, an ICT-driven age, are undergoing innovations as a result of the changing demands in the education enterprise. Classrooms have become more inclusive with respect to the diverse needs of gender, cultural and individual differences. Also classrooms have become largely ICT integrated and the run is towards effective use of ICT materials to enhance learning and teaching. So, definitely my classroom will be equipped with ICT tools.

There would be a computer with internet access for every student. I would also have Adobe Photoshop on each computer so students could learn to do digital scrapbooking. Of course it would have Microsoft Office on them also for word processing and PowerPoint presentations. I would also have the WYNN program and Test Talker program on computers for students with severe reading problems. My classroom would have a  smart board which would be an interactive board for my lessons. I would also have a large TV for showing movies that go with my lessons . I would also have a large kitchen unit with sink, stove, oven, microwave, washer, dryer and dishwasher to teach life skills. There would also be an attached bathroom so students didn’t have to wander the halls in order to use the bathroom. My classroom would also have a phone in it to use to call parents if there are any behavior problems. I would have individualized lessons for each student according to their needs. This hopefully would keep them engaged in order to prevent behavior problems.

I came across this quotation when I was searching online on how an ideal classroom should be. I feel that colours of the classroom actually important to decide the mood and atmosphere of the students. Therefore, I will try to have my classroom in nice bright colours.

http://www.priceless-teaching-strategies.com/classroom_displays.html —> This link tells us the best way to display resources in the classroom. In my classroom, one of the most important thing that I will definitely display is the students’ work and also photograph of theirs which they want to share. It can be either theirs or also their family photograph. I feel this way, students able to feel much more at home and able to create the environment.

I will  groom my students to be tolerant, morally upstanding, curious, and responsible. They are growing up in a world full of intolerance, war, advertising, and technology. It is my job, as an English educator, to use texts and conversations as a tool to guide these students to make their own decisions, and to form their own well-informed beliefs. Therefore, materials or resources will not only focus on the aspect of inteligence but also aesthetic and moral aspects and not forgetting to incorporate ICT in my teaching.

To manage my students, i feel classroom discipline is important. I will setup a few rules and regulations like those at home and these rules will be taken under agreement of all the students. I feel this way the students will feel responsible towards the rules that they had created.

Hope this will make my classroom an ideal one…how about yours????

Came across this reading in Sakila’s entry . A brillant find

Must read article…

Hello friends, this is a good article on issues and principles in integrating ICT in Malaysia. I feel this is important because as future teacher we need have this general knowledge of ICT to make all the aims and policies come true and thus achieve our goals in creating digital citizen.

Integrating ICT and Other Technologies in Teacher Education: Trends, Issues and Guiding Principles

By Jonathan Anderson, Flinders University of South Australia

Below is the extract from the article…..

"Countries in the region are at different stages in adopting national policies relating to ICT in education and also have different levels of resources to devote to such policies. Three country reports included in a SEAMEO document on pre-service teacher training and professional development in the use of ICT illustrate the diversity in the region (Downes et al. 2003). The country report for Malaysia notes that the Prime Minister announced his Vision 2020 for Malaysia in 1992 and in 1994 unveiled a plan for a multimedia Super Corridor, which involved the development of Smart Schools. The first of these Smart Schools came online three years later with the aim that by 2010 all schools in Malaysia will be Smart Schools. An Outline Perspective Plan for 2001-2010 aims to:

  • Develop a quality workforce that is knowledgeable with highly tuned thinking skills, is able to use technology and new resources optimally to combine creativity and innovation effectively and has a diversity of skills and knowledge in the use of ICT.
  • Educate students so they are knowledgeable and ICT literate and able to use technology for the betterment of themselves, their communities and their nation. (Downes et al. 2003, p. C5).

Do read and together change our nation into ICT native…
